PROVO -- The No. 18 BYU women's volleyball team (18-2, 9-1 MWC) made short work of the visiting San Diego State Aztecs (8-14, 2-8 MWC) Saturday night in the Smith Fieldhouse as the Cougars recorded their 12th sweep of the season with a 30-20, 30-22, 30-27 win.

"I thought this was a good match for us," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "We played particularly nice floor defense in outdigging San Diego State. We stayed very composed in game three when we could have easily let them get the better of us. I'm very pleased with the win and the weekend in general."

Junior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman led BYU with 16 kills, the 10th time she has done so this season. Erica Lott recorded her sixth double-double of the year with 14 kills and 10 digs, while Lindsy Hartsock added 12 kills on .556 hitting and Kim Wilson Sorensen added 11. Annie Kemp Pinegar led BYU with 14 digs.

Game one was tight to start as both teams battled to an early tie before the Cougars turned on the gas with a 7-0 run, thanks in part to three kills from Goodman, to take a 12-6 lead. The Aztecs fought back with three straight points of their own and then got within two at 17-15 but another BYU run, this time a 6-0 spurt, kept the game firmly in the Cougars' clutches as they cruised to a 30-20 game-one win. BYU held the Aztecs to just .026 hitting in the game while posting a .278 mark, including eight kills from Goodman.

The Cougars built on that momentum to begin game two, jumping out to a 15-7 lead midway, but SDSU stormed back with an 11-3 run to tie the game up at 18-18. However, after the two squads traded points, back-to-back kills from Wilson Sorensen sparked an 11-3 BYU tear to end the game, 30-22.

SDSU came out firing in game three, scoring four straight points to open the game until a kill from Lott got BYU on the board. The Cougars continued to struggle offensively as the game wore on while the Aztecs were red hot with six kills on eight swings to build a 12-6 lead. After SDSU increased its lead to seven points at 19-12, the Cougars started to claw their way back with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 19-17. The Aztecs hung on, going up 23-19, until a characteristic BYU run sealed the deal for the Cougars, 30-27.

BYU will return to action next week against two in-state rivals as the Cougars take on Weber State Tuesday night at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse before facing Utah in Salt Lake City on Friday night.
