Goodman Swings No. 18 BYU to Sweep of UNLV
PROVO -- Chelsea Goodman and the No. 18 Cougars (17-2, 8-1) swept UNLV (14-7, 5-4) behind Goodman's match-high 22 kills. She also recorded 10 digs for her 13th double-double of the season, which leads the Mountain West Conference. BYU has 11 sweeps on the season.
"I thought tonight was a nice performance for our team," BYU head coach Jason Watson said. "I especially thought our outside hitters did a nice job and got us going when we needed it. I'm very pleased with the way our team is playing right now."
Goodman led the team in kills and ended up hitting .447. Kim Wilson had 10 kills on the night and three blocks. Lindsy Hartsock also got in on the action with three blocks and seven kills. Erica Lott put in nine kills and nine digs. Annie Pinegar led the team in digs with 14.
"I really have to give credit to my teammates," Goodman said. "I just try to capitalize on what they give me. It's easy to get excited when you're surrounded by such great players."
UNLV took the first sizable lead in the first game going on a 5-1 run to put the rebels up 10-6. BYU came back with an 11-2 run that included an ace by Goodman. BYU would finish the game 30-27 with kills from Lott, Goodman and Amy Schlauder.
The second game started close until BYU went on a 9-1 run highlighted by a pancake by Pinegar that set up a Goodman kill. Hartsock also put her signature on that run with a kill that was passed straight back to her, which she sent right back to UNLV. BYU switched possessions after that but pulled away to finish the game 30-24.
In the final game, UNLV played catch-up until taking a 17-16. The Cougars went on a six-point tear to create a deficit UNLV would not overcome. Hartsock put the game away when Schlauder set her up for her final kill to the right corner.
BYU will play San Diego State on Saturday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.
