Cougars Take UCF Tournament Title With Sweep
Lott Named MVP, Joins Hartsock On All-Tournament Team
ORLANDO -- The Cougars brought home the hardware Saturday from the UCF Fall Invitational, recording their third sweep of the weekend with a 30-13, 30-20, 30-25 win over Stetson and taking home the tournament title. Junior rightside hitter Erica Lott earned tournament MVP honors, joining senior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock on the All-Tournament team.
"This was a nice opening weekend for us," said BYU head coach Jason Watson. "It was difficult to play early in the morning and then come back and play again, but I think we learned a lot about our team. I feel really good about where we're at."
Lott led BYU against the Hatters, adding a match-high 18 kills to her morning total of 15. The junior, who made a switch from outside hitter to rightside in the offseason, hit .556 for the match and .379 for the weekend. Hartsock, the nation's second-best hitter in 2005, hit .593 for the tournament including .833 against Stetson. Junior outside hitter Chelsea Goodman added 11 kills and a match-best 15 digs for her first double-double of the season.
Several Cougars made their debuts in the season-opening tournament for BYU, including redshirt freshmen Marisa Vandersteen and Ashton Hansen. Vandersteen recorded three kills on three swings and two blocks in just one game against Stetson. Hansen recorded four kills on six attempts in two games of action. Sophomore Bryn Porter made the first start of her career and made good on the opportunity with a career-high 11 kills.
The Cougars hit .415 for the match and held the Hatters to just a 0.83 mark. BYU also once again came out on top in every statistical category on the afternoon.
The 3-0 Cougars now return to Provo for their home opener against No. 4 Stanford Friday in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars host the four-team BYU Molten Classic Friday and Saturday.
