Cougars Continue Winning Ways
POCATELLO -- Undefeated is once again a rallying cry in Provo as the Cougars continued their run through the 2005 season with a sweep of Idaho State to move to 4-0 on the year. The 30-25, 30-26, 30-24 victory on the Bengals' home court marked the second sweep of the year for BYU.
"This was a good win for us," said BYU Head Coach Jason Watson. "We faced a great deal of adversity with the crowd and as well as our opponent, but we were able to stay together. I think we're beginning to mature and be able to deal with some things as a group that we haven't in the past."
BYU sophomore Chelsea Goodman led the Cougars with a career-high 16 kills, marking the fourth straight game in which she has recorded double-digit putaways. Fellow sophomore Erica Lott followed close behind with 15 kills on a season-high .464 hitting percentage. Goodman also added 10 digs for her first double-double of the season while Annie Kemp added 11 in front of her hometown crowd. Senior setter Lauren Richards Evans also picked up 11 digs to go with her 46 assists, marking her second double-double of the year.
"Both of our outside hitters did a real nice job tonight," Watson said. "We also outdug them, which was a goal going into the match so we did a real nice job defensively."
Game one went 30-25 in favor of the Cougars with Lott putting down the winning kill. BYU cruised throughout most of game two, building an eight-point lead and setting up game point at 29-23. The Bengals weren't ready to go down quietly, however as they fought off three game points to get to within three at 26-29. But a net call on the next point gave the Cougars the game two victory. The Bengals fought back in game three, staring down the potential sweep with determination and building a four-point lead. However, BYU proved dominant, roaring back to win the game at 30-24.
At a perfect 4-0 the Cougars now return home for what could be their biggest test of the season so far as they face instate rival Utah State Saturday at 7 p.m. The Aggies are currently 4-3, including a heartbreaking five-game loss to Utah.
"Utah State poses a great deal of troubles for us," Watson said. "They're playing very well and have competed hard in the last two matches they played, going to five games in both. It's always been a great match and we need to be prepared and rested."
