Undefeated on Michaelis Court
PROVO -- Undefeated ... a sweet way for first year coach Jason Watson to begin the season as the Cougar women's volleyball team beat Kansas 30-27, 28-30, 30-22, 30-28, marking the first victory on Elaine Michaelis Court, a name given prior to the game in a ceremony honoring the legendary coach.
"This was a very significant win for us, especially looking at our postseason aspirations," said Watson. "Getting a win like this against a quality opponent in a great conference certainly helps us."
The Cougars were led by junior middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock who had a career-high 20 kills while hitting .633 to go along with her six blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Erica Lott added 16 kills and recorded a career high in digs with 10.
"It's exciting to get a new career high," said Hartsock. "It is a big goal for me. You always want to get better and better every time you play."
Besides a lopsided third game in which the Cougars led the entire way, each of the other games presented "down to the wire" action in which the Cougars lost only one. Game 2, which the Jayhawks stole, included 18 ties and 8 lead changes. It was the Cougar's composure that allowed them to win their third in a row. It also marked the second time this season the Cougars have beaten a team ranked higher than them as Kansas came into the match listed No. 34 while the Cougars were No. 36. BYU also defeated Nevada last weekend, who was listed No. 35
In game one, the Cougars started slow, trailing Kansas early on 9-4, but quickly found a rhythm tying the game at 15-15. After falling behind again, the Cougars found a way to take the lead again at 28-27. Sophomore outside hitter Chelsea Goodman finished off the comeback with a monster kill, giving BYU the game.
After losing game two, the Cougars never trailed in game three. Hartsock racked up five kills and, after finishing off the Jayhhawks easily 30-22, the Cougars looked to be unstoppable.
But Kansas gave it a go in game four, and after falling behind 25-19, tied the game at 26. The game stayed tied until Goodman hit a missile from the outside that was un-returnable. BYU finished the match off when the Jayhawks botched their serve.
The Cougars improved to 3-0 on the season and now prepare for a road match against the Idaho State Bengals next Wednesday in Pocatello.
