BYU's Kim Wilson and Erica Lott Named to All-Tournament Team

PROVO -- BYU improved to 4-2 on the season with a dominating 3-0 sweep of Central Florida to conclude the BYU Mizuno Classic.

On the strength of their serve game, the Cougars recorded wins of 30-15, 30-12, 30-22 over the Knights. The Cougars finished the tournament with a 2-1 record to place second behind 3-0 Oklahoma. The Cougars dropped a tough five-game match to the Sooners earlier Saturday afternoon.

"We played really well," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We've had to deal with several injuries but everyone stepped up and did a great job."

Led by middle hitters Lindsy Hartsock and Catherine Parker, the Cougars hit a season-high .400 against Central Florida. Hartsock put down a game-high 13 kills while hitting .579 while Parker recorded 10 kills and a .533 attack percentage. Outside hitter Erica Lott added nine kills for the Cougars and a game-high four service aces. Setter Lauren Richards had three aces while totaling 30 assists.

BYU's strong serving and solid defense helped hold the Knights to a negative (.067) attack percentage as Central Florida managed just 17 kills to BYU's 45. Shane Neiderworder and Janet Mitchell led the Knights with five kills apiece.

In BYU's first match of the day, the Cougars lost a close contest to Oklahoma, falling in five games (26-30, 30-28, 30-27, 20-30, 10-15).

"They played better than us in all phases of the game," said Lamb. "I'm disappointed. We need to take care of the first game instead of getting ourselves into a hole, but we'll do better in the next match."

The Cougars struggled in the first game as they tried to find their rhythm. Despite having their best hitting percentage of the match, .351, BYU could not overcome mistakes and dropped game one.

In game two, the Cougars stepped up the defense, recording seven of their 13 total blocks, to overcome a dismal .150 hitting percentage and win the game. After going down 18-12, BYU put together a 6-0 run, which included two aces and a kill by Richards, to get back in it. Kills by Kim Wilson on four of the last five Cougar points gave BYU the victory.

BYU returned to form in game three, hitting .333 and doubling up the Sooners on digs, 14-7. Two consecutive kills by Wilson, who had 20 in the match, sealed the game for BYU to put them up 2-1.

But it was all Oklahoma from there as the Sooners dominated the fourth and fifth games, hitting .439 in the fourth game and .400 in the fifth while holding the Cougars to .250 and .190 respectively.

Wilson and Lott led the way for the Cougars offensively, with Wilson recording 20 kills on .326 hitting and Lott notching a career-high 19 kills on .255 hitting. Lindsey Evans picked up 18 digs and Lindsy Hartsock led the way with 8 blocks.

UVSC also matched BYU's 2-1 tournament record, while Memphis went 1-3 and Central Florida finished 0-3.

Oklahoma's Joanna Schmitt was the Mizuno Classic Most Valuable Player. Joining BYU's Wilson and Lott on the All-Tournament Team were UVSC's Deisa Borghetti, Memphis' Tiara Gilkey, Central Florida's Emily Watts and Oklahoma's Rachel Jackson.
