UNIVERSITY PARK -- Led by a stifling defensive effort, BYU opened the 2004 women's volleyball season with a 30-17, 30-15, 30-22 victory over Quinnipiac at the Penn State Classic.

"We did a nice job controlling them on defense," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We made them play our game. It was a good first match for us."

The Cougars held the Bobcats to just 13 total kills and a negative attack percentage (-.139) while putting up 13 team blocks. BYU recorded 48 kills with an efficient .283 hitting percentage.

Outside hitter Kim Wilson led the Cougars with a game-high 10 kills while making only one error in 17 attempts for a .529 attack percentage. The junior did her damage while playing in just two of the three games. In all, eight different Cougars recording three or more kills with junior middle blocker Lexi Brown and redshirt freshman rightside hitter Erica Lott putting down nine kills apiece. Redshirt freshman middle blocker Catherine Parker, who along with Lott was playing in her first college match, added six kills and a game-best seven blocks.

"Kim (Wilson) played a great game for us," Lamb said. "I think Erica (Lott) played well and Catherine (Parker) had big shoes to fill with Lindsy (Hartsock) sitting out but was able to step up when we needed her."

Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year Lindsy Hartsock sat out the match nursing an injury but could possibly return to the court Saturday when the Cougars play Rutgers and nationally ranked Penn State.

"There were some good things that happened tonight and we got a chance to play a lot of players," said Lamb, who called on 12 different Cougars during the match. "Being the first match we had a few bugs to work out. We hope to step it up and play better tomorrow."

Quinnipiac was led by Kalyn Hundley's eight kills, one of only two Bobcats to record more than one kill.

BYU will conclude tournament play Saturday, facing Rutgers at 1 p.m. before taking on No. 7-ranked Penn State at 8 p.m.
