PROVO -- It was a Halloween of horrors for New Mexico Friday night as the BYU women's volleyball team earned a sweep 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-20), extending the Lobo losing streak to 17 matches. The win improves the Cougars to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Lobos fall to 3-20, 0-9.

"We played a solid all-around match tonight," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "The ball was distributed well and did what we needed to do for the sweep."

BYU out-hit the Lobos .365 to .115 and hit over .314 in each game.

The Cougars took the lead early in the first game and never looked back. With the score 5-3 BYU, the Cougars reeled off a 5-0 run, with kills from four different players to take a commanding lead. The Lobos attempted to counter with mini runs of their own, but were unable to get within three points. Brown led all players in the first game with six kills.

Game two was closer at the start, and the two teams were tied four times in the early going. With the two teams tied at 8-8, BYU went on a tear with a 17-4 run, largely on the serving of junior outside hitters April Varner and Lindsey Metcalf. The Lobos fought back with a 9-4 run of their own, but Metcalf put the Cougars up 2-0 by putting down a game-sealing kill.

UNM came out a determined team in the third game. BYU won the first point on a Brown kill for a 1-0 lead, but the Lobos took control from there. UNM would be tied or hold the lead until it hit 10 points. Then the Cougars took over, leading by as many as three, but the Lobos would fight back on the backs of Anna Reines and Jennifer Heasty. UNM would take its last lead of the match after a Chelsea Sondrup kill made it 19-18. The Cougars then went on a tear to end the match by scoring 12 of the next 13 points. Brown was instrumental in that run contributing three kills. Sondrup also played a key role, as she was forced into four attack errors in the critical stretch. Junior Lindsey Kearl sealed the match with an ace.

Sophomore middle blocker Lexi Brown was the lone Cougar in double-digit kills, as she put down a match-high 14, while hitting .429. She also tied for the match-high with four blocks and led the team with 28 attack attempts.

"Lauren and I have been playing with each other since we've been 16," Brown said. "So we have a lot of chemistry and it's fun to play with her."

Varner came off the bench to finish with nine kills on .421 hitting with two solo blocks.

Metcalf also finished the match with four blocks to tie with Brown, and she also put up a match-high 12 digs. Senior libero Uila Crabbe recorded 10 digs.

Sophomore setter Lauren Richards dished out 42 assists to go with three blocks, three digs, two service aces and two kills.

Georgia Whitson led UNM with 11 kills on .364 hitting.

BYU will conclude its home MWC schedule when it hosts Air Force Saturday at 5 p.m.
