Hartsock, Cougars Block Cowgirls
LARAMIE -- One of the best blocking performances in school history carried the BYU women's volleyball team to a 3-1 victory over Wyoming Friday in Laramie.
BYU improved to 16-5 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain West with the 26-30, 30-28, 30-25, 30-17 victory. Wyoming fell to 3-5 in league play and 14-9 overall.
Led by a 10-block effort from freshman middle blocker Lindsy Hartsock, the Cougars totaled a season-high 21 team blocks to stifle Wyoming's attack. The 21 Cougar blocks is the eighth-best single-match total in a storied BYU history.
Wyoming hit only .099 against the BYU block while the Cougars managed a .158 attack percentage against Wyoming's solid 10-block effort.
"Our serving improved in the final two games and it really helped set up our block," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "Lindsy (Hartsock) really gave us a lift with her blocking."
Hartsock finished with double-digit blocks for the second time this season. She had 11 blocks in BYU's upset win over then No. 8-ranked Penn State on Sept. 13. Hartsock also hit .364 for the match with six kills in 11 attempts.
Junior outside hitter Lindsey Metcalf added seven blocks for BYU and shared team-high kill honors at 10 with senior rightside hitter Carrie Bowers. Senior middle blocker Laura Nielsen and junior outside hitter April Varner made solid contributions off the bench. Nielsen put up four blocks in only one game of action and Varner added six kills and two digs in her two games.
"April and Laura both came in and did a nice job," Lamb said. "This is a tough road swing so I'm happy to get out of here with a win."
The Cougars continue the Front Range trip Saturday when they look to upset MWC-leader Colorado State at Moby Arena for the second straight season. BYU defeated the Rams in Fort Collins last year in the regular season and at the MWC Tournament. CSU entered play this week with a 16-4 record and No. 18 national ranking.
