PROVO -- The BYU women's volleyball dug itself into an early hole, and was unable to dig itself out, as instate rival Utah prevailed 3-1 (30-25, 30-27, 19-30, 30-20) Friday night in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars dropped to 13-5 overall and 3-2 in the Mountain West Conference, while the Utes improved to 10-6, 4-1.

"I thought Utah did a great job, I though they played well," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "They were the better team tonight."

Although BYU showed glimpses of what it's capable of, its lack of consistency was a theme through the first two games.

The Cougars took an early 1-0 lead on a Lindsy Lewis-Hartsock kill, but the Utes proceeded to go on a 4-0 run that included two BYU attack errors. BYU would answer back with a 7-2 run, as Lexi Brown put down three kills in the stretch. From there the game turned into lead changes and ties. After Kim Wilson tied the game at 19-19 with a kill, Utah proceeded to reel off a 5-0 run to take control of the game.

The second game was closer, but mirrored the action in the first. Utah led by as many as five with a 10-5 lead, but BYU would fight back and take it first lead of the game at 18-17 on consecutive kills by Lindsey Metcalf, Wilson and Brown. The two teams were deadlocked at 19-19, as they were in the first game, and similarly, the Utes went on a 5-0 run to take another 24-19 lead. The Cougars would fight from there, however, and immediately staged a 5-0 run of their own to tie it at 24-24 on a Wilson kill. Kim Turner then led the Utes to the win with two decisive kills.

The third game saw a crisp and consistent Cougar squad as they took a quick 5-1 lead on kills by Metcalf, Brown and Wilson. The Utes would get to within three points of the Cougars on numerous occasions, but was repeatedly rebuffed in their attempts by BYU. Carrie Bowers led the Cougars with six kills in the game, supported by four kills a piece from Wilson and Brown. In the game BYU hit a match-high .308, while holding the Utes to a game low .081.

BYU was buried to start the fourth game, as Utah started with an 8-0 run. Turner led the Utes with seven kills and five blocks in the game.

"I think the high end of our team is really high," Lamb said. "I think at the times we played well, it was pretty good. We saw glimpes of how we can play tonight, we just need to be more consistent."

Wilson led BYU with a match-high 18 kills, to go with 11 digs for her fifth double-double of the year. Brown tallied a career-high 16 kills on .448 hitting with four digs and two blocks.

Defensively, Lewis-Hartsock put up a match-high seven blocks and Uila Crabbe put up a match-high 15 digs.

Turner led the Utes with 16 kills, seven blocks and seven digs.

BYU will again be at home next week when it hosts San Diego State on Friday at 7 p.m. and UNLV on Saturday at 7 p.m.
