Varner and Metcalf Lead Way with Double-Doubles

PROVO -- Rebounding from a loss the previous night, the BYU women's volleyball team came back energized on Saturday night to sweep Wyoming 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-25) in the Smith Fieldhouse. The win improves the Cougars to 10-4 overall and 1-1 in the Mountain West Conference, while dropping the Cowgirls to 10-6, 0-2.

BYU was led by the outside hitting duo of April Varner and Lindsey Metcalf, who each posted double-doubles. Varner finished the night with a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs, while Metcalf recorded 12 kills with 10 digs. Metcalf also put up a match-high five blocks.

The Cougars didn't hit under .300 in any of the three games, and averaged a .342 attack percentage in the match, while holding the Cowgirls to .142.

"We played very well tonight, and our offensive play was solid," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "We had contributions from everybody, which is what we need on a nightly basis."

The Cougars jumped out to a quick lead in the first game as a Michele Rauter hitting error and a Carrie Bowers kill combined to put BYU up 2-0. BYU was able to capitalize on four early Cowgirl attack errors to stay ahead. The Cougars would hold the lead throughout the game and, unable to mount any significant runs, continued to slowly pull away as the game progressed. BYU led by as many as eight points and were led by four kills from April Varner. Bowers and Metcalf led a balanced Cougars attack, as each put down three kills in the game.

Game two started with a Rauter kill that gave Wyoming a short-lived 1-0 lead. BYU would bounce back with a 3-0 run on the strength of a Lauren Richards ace, book ended by kills from Varner and Lindsy Lewis-Hartsock. Cowgirl Leah Powers would put down a kill to make the game 3-2 for BYU, but the Cougars immediately staged a 5-0 run to take a commanding 8-2 lead. BYU wouldn't look back, but Wyoming would fight back to within two points at 19-17 on back-to-back kills from Jill Roslund and Rauter. With the score 20-17, Sahara Castillo took back the momentum for BYU with back-to-back service aces. The game was sealed with consecutive errors by Roslund and Rauter.

Wyoming started strongly in the third game, taking a quick 4-0 lead as Rauter put down two kills. The Cougars would chip away at the lead and cut the Cowgirl lead to 7-4, before pulling out a 5-0 run on the serving of Metcalf to take the lead at 9-7. The two teams would proceed to trade points and mini-runs, and Wyoming retook the lead at 17-16, but the Cougars were too much down the stretch, as three kills from Lexi Brown and two kills each from Metcalf and Varner sealed the match for BYU.

"We had so much energy tonight," Metcalf said. "We just wanted to work hard and have fun out there. It's so nice to see everybody on the team play well, instead of just focusing on your own play."

Bowers put down nine kills with seven digs and three blocks, with a .471 attack percentage. Junior middle blocker Lexi Brown came on in the second game and added a spark, as she collected six kills and four blocks. Lauren Richards had another solid all-around night, dishing out 38 assists to go with five kills, three digs, two aces and two blocks. As a team, BYU out-blocked Wyoming 11.5-3.

Rauter led the Wyoming cause, with 13 kills and 11 digs. Amanda Miller put up a match-high 16 digs.

BYU will continue MWC play next week, when it travels to play New Mexico on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Air Force on Friday at 7 p.m.
