First-Day Split in Missouri for Cougars

SPRINGFIELD -- It was a gut-wrenching split for BYU in the first day of the SMS Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational, as the Cougars lost to Arkansas 3-2 (30-27, 30-16, 28-30, 18-30, 15-13) before defeating North Texas 3-1 (31-33, 30-23, 30-25, 30-24).

Redshirt freshman middle blocker Lindsy Lewis-Hartsock had a break-out match against North Texas, as she had a career highs with 14 kills, six blocks and a .684 hitting percentage. In BYU's first four matches of the season, Lewis-Hartsock had managed 10 kills.

"They were a pretty good team, and we needed to do a lot of good things to win," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "Nobody is easy at this level. We aren't dominating like we can because we aren't as confident as we should be, but we took steps toward that tonight."

After being unable to hold a lead in the first game, which the Cougars ceded to the Eagles, BYU's block came alive in repeatedly turning the North Texas (4-1) attack away.

BYU proceeded to take the next three games by controlling play at the net. On the match the Cougars out-blocked the Eagles 19-4.

Kim Wilson tied her career high in kills with 18, while also tallying three aces and five digs. Lindsey Metcalf chipped in with 12 kills, nine digs and five blocks.

Earlier in the day, BYU dropped a hard fought 3-2 decision to Arkansas (2-3).

The Ladybacks won the first two games, the second of which was behind a blistering attack that hit .536 and put down 15 kills with no attack errors. The Cougars bounced back, however, winning the next two games.

In the fourth game, the Cougars dominated play by hitting .467 with 16 kills, while limiting Arkansas to a match-low .158 attack percentage.

With momentum clearly with BYU, the Ladybacks matched the Cougars point-for-point in the deciding game, before Arkansas, behind an efficient attack that hit .583, managed to nip BYU for the win.

"It's too bad we can't learn all our lessons and win at the same time," Lamb said. "We got off to a slow start and fought back to grab the momentum, but couldn't finish it. If we want to win, one thing we have to do is improve our passing."

Carrie Bowers led the Cougars for the fourth consecutive time with a match-high 17 kills with 11 digs, for her first career double-double. She also hit .417 (17-2-36) to go with five assists and one solo block. Four other Cougars including Richards, Metcalf, Wilson and Brown also had double-digit kills, as each tallied 11.

Richards hit a career-high .526 with 11 kills, six digs, two blocks and 48 assists.

Arkansas had four players with double-digit kills, and were led by 17 kills from Kele Brewer, 16 kills from Sara Kincaid and 14 kills from Jennifer Haaser. Kincaid and Haaser also led the Ladybacks by each hitting .379.

BYU will finish the tournament on Saturday with matches against Saint Louis at 2:30 p.m. (CDT) and Southwest Missouri State at 7 p.m.
