No. 2 Hawai'i Rolls Over Cougars
PROVO -- In a match-up of former Western Athletic Conference rivals, BYU lost to No. 2 Hawai'i 23-30, 19-30, 17-30 Tuesday night in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars drop to 14-18 on the season, while the Rainbow Wahine boost their record to 29-1.
"We were really flat tonight," BYU coach Karen Lamb said. "With the exception of a few matches this year, one thing about this team is we've competed really hard."
The Cougars were led by freshman Kim Wilson who had a team-high nine kills (.286) and Lindsey Metcalf who had eight kills (.103).
The first game started closely as the Rainbow Wahine's player-of-the-year candidate outside hitter Kim Willoughby had trouble getting on track. A kill by Wilson pulled the Cougars within two points at 14-16, but that was as close as the Cougars would draw as Hawai'i, aided by a four point run, took control of the game behind the duo of Willoughby and outside hitter Lily Kahumoku.
The Cougars held a brief two-point lead at 6-4 after a Wilson kill, but the Rainbow Wahine used a 6-2 run, on the strength of a pair of kills and aces by Willoughby, to take a 10-8 lead. Hawai'i would not look back in scoring 20 of the next 31 points to take the game. The Cougars hit .371 for the game, but the Rainbow Wahine controlled play in hitting .625.
In game three Hawai'i ran out to a quick eight point lead (16-8) and hit a blistering .424 while holding the Cougars to a .000 attack percentage. Hawai'i sealed the match on a Nohea Tano kill.
The Cougar block was staunch as usual as the two teams tied with seven blocks each. The Rainbow Wahine out-hit the Cougars .426 to .158, and displayed extensive court coverage in outdigging BYU 40-19.
As they have all season Willoughby and Kahumoku led the Rainbow Wahine with a match-high 20 kills and 11 kills, respectively. Willoughby also had a match-high five service aces with eight digs while hitting .484.
"This is definitely not the same team we saw on the weekend," Lamb said. "We just didn't have much left tonight."
The Cougars will close their season against No. 12 Arizona Friday at 7 p.m. in the Smith Fieldhouse.
