BYU Opens Mountain West Conference play Friday and Saturday at Air Force and New Mexico

PROVO -- BYU women's volleyball team opens the Mountain West Conference season with matches Friday at Air Force and Saturday at New Mexico. Both matches begin at 7 p.m. The Preseason favorite to win the inaugural Mountain West Conference title, the Cougars enter conference play with a 7-2 record and a No. 11 national ranking.

A Quick Look at the Cougars

Several Cougar players lead conference statistical categories after the preseason. Senior All-American setter Anna-Lena Smith leads the conference in assists, averaging 13.81 per game, and sophomore middle blocker Nina Puikkonen is leading the league in kills at 4.31 per game. Puikkonen is also the top blocker, averaging 1.47, while sophomore teammate Jackie Bundy is second in blocks at 1.41. Senior outside hitter Mari Carpenter is second in hitting percentage at .415. The Cougars are coming off a split last week, defeating California in three games before losing to No. 6 Stanford at the Pac-10/Mountain West Challenge. BYU has eight letterwinners returning from last year's 31-4 team, including All-American setter Anna-Lena Smith and all-conference performers Nina Puikkonen, Melissa Layton and Mari Carpenter.

Quote from Coach Elaine Michaelis

It is exciting to begin conference play, especially with these being our first-ever Mountain West Conference matches. We played well at times last week but we hope to improve our consistency. I feel like we will play well this week.

Series with the Falcons

This will be BYU's fifth meeting with Air Force. The Cougars hold a 4-0 advantage in the series, winning twice in 1996 and two times in 1997 by 3-0 counts as part of the Western Athletic Conference. BYU is 2-0 at Air Force.

Scouting Air Force

At 11-2, the Falcons have already set a school record for most wins in a season since moving to division I in 1996. Last year the Falcons were 9-17 and 2-12 in the WAC. Coach Penny Lucas-White has 11 letterwinners and five of six starters returning. Senior outside hitters Tracy Wilkerson and Brooke Effland lead the team and the conference in digs with 3.92 and 3.59 digs per game, respectively. As a team, the Falcons are second in the conference in digs and third in hitting (.237) while riding a five-match winning streak.

Series with the Lobos

This will be BYU's 51st meeting with New Mexico. The Cougars have a 43-7 series record with the Lobos, dating back to 1970. BYU is 18-4 in Albuquerque. BYU has a seven-match winning streak, with the Lobos last victory taking place in Provo, 3-0, in 1995. The Cougars have also won the last seven meetings in Albuquerque, with the Lobos last home win being a 3-1 win in 1991.

New Mountain West Conference

The Mountain West Conference enters its inaugural season in 1999. The Mountain West schools -- Air Force Academy, Brigham Young University, Colorado State University, University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, UNLV, University of Utah and Wyoming -- have garnered much success over the years in women's volleyball. Five of the institutions (BYU, CSU, New Mexico, San Diego State and Wyoming) have competed in the NCAA Tournament at least twice this decade, including BYU advancing to the NCAA Regional Finals each of the last three years and the NCAA Final Four in 1993.

MWC Preseason Poll

The Cougars, who have won the inaugural conference championship in each of their three previous leagues, were voted the coaches' preseason favorite to win the first Mountain West Conference title. BYU will host the inaugural MWC tournament Nov. 24-27 at the Smith Fieldhouse in Provo.
