BYU Women's Volleyball Uses Offensive Attack To Defeat Weber State
OGDEN -- Hitting an impressive .335 percentage as a team, the 10th-ranked BYU women's volleyball team defeated Weber State 15-9, 11-15, 15-10, 15-3, to improve its overall record to 10-2. With the loss, the Wildcats dropped to 9-7 overall.
Senior Mari Carpenter led the way for the Cougars, finishing with 20 kills and a .359 hitting percentage. Senior Caroline Bower and sophomore Nina Puikkonen each added 15 kills while hitting .361 and .324, respectively. Bower also led the Cougar defense with 17 digs.
"Caroline provided great leadership on the floor," head coach Elaine Michaelis said. "She hit well, dug well and played a good match."
All-American setter Anna-Lena Smith continued toward the all-time BYU assists record, finishing with 66 assists. After tonight, Smith is only 191 assists away from setting the record currently held by U.S. National Team setter Charlene Johnson Tagaloa.
Sophomore Jackie Bundy contributed to the balanced attack with a team-high seven blocks, while adding 11 kills and six digs.
For the Wildcats, two freshmen led the way, both offensively and defensively. Freshman outside hitter Holly Alsup led their offensive attack with 17 kills and added nine digs. Freshman Stephanie Johnson, also an outside hitter, had a team-high 10 digs and also had 13 kills.
The Cougars return to Mountain West Conference play Friday when they host UNLV, at 7 p.m., in the Smith Fieldhouse.
