BYU Women's Volleyball Team Cruises Past Aztecs
PROVO -- With every player seeing playing time, the No. 10 BYU women's volleyball team cruised past San Diego State 15-7, 15-6, 15-11, Saturday.
The win improved the Cougars' overall record to 12-2. They remain undefeated in the Mountain West Conference at 4-0.
The Cougars were led offensively by sophomore middle blocker Nina Puikkonen, who finished with 17 kills and a .682 hitting percentage. All-American setter Anna-Lena Smith was also outstanding, finishing with 31 assists and a team-high five blocks.
"We played pretty steady all three games," BYU coach Elaine Michaelis said. "That allowed us to get some people some experience that will really help us in the future."
A big part of the Cougars' future is freshman standout Sunny Tonga. Tonga was also in double-digits in kills with 10. Senior outside hitter Caroline Bower led the Cougars with nine digs while also adding nine kills.
Christine Pfrezinger led the Aztecs, who hit -.019 for the match, with six kills. Lisa Bostan finished with nine digs.
BYU will face Utah Friday at 7 p.m. in Salt Lake City.
