Michaelis Achieves Milestone with Win Over SDSU

PROVO -- More than 2,500 Cougar volleyball fans watched Saturday as BYU coach Elaine Michaelis reached yet another milestone.

Already the second-winningest division I coach of all-time, Michaelis achieved her 850th career win Saturday in front of 2,578 fans when her Cougar team swept San Diego State 15-11, 15-7, 15-4 at the Smith Fieldhouse.

"It's just another match to me,"Michaelis said. "The players go out there on the court and do it. I really enjoy the job, working with these people (players) and the game of volleyball. It's a lot of fun."

The victory improved the Cougars to 9-3 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain West Conference. Michaelis' overall mark now stands at an impressive 850-212-5.

"Give her all the credit," BYU All-American Nina Puikkonen said. "She knows the game inside and out."

Puikkonen proved to know the game pretty well, too, Saturday, recording match-highs of 12 kills and six blocks. The junior middle blocker, who leads the nation in blocking, got help from fellow juniors Jackie Bundy and Kalani Tonga, who added seven kills and five blocks apiece. Tonga, whose five blocks equaled her season-high, had a match-best 10 digs while Bundy was the night's most efficient hitter with a .429 attack percentage.

As a team, BYU out blocked the Aztecs 15.5 to 4.0 while out hitting them .252 to .029. Monet Solberg had eight kills and eight digs to lead the Aztecs, who dropped to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play with the loss.

BYU plays three matches next week. Before going on the road to play No. 4 Colorado State and Wyoming Friday and Saturday, the Cougars will host in-state foe Weber State Tuesday in the Smith Fieldhouse.
