11-Seed BYU to host opening NCAA tournament rounds

PROVO, Utah – The BYU women’s volleyball team received the No. 11 overall seed in the 2021 NCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament and will host the first and second rounds in the Smith Fieldhouse.

The West Coast Conference champion Cougars (28-1) will face Boise State (24-10) on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. MST. Earlier in the day, Utah (21-8) and UVU (16-12) will face off first at 4 p.m. MST. The winning teams from Friday’s matches will then play a second-round contest on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m.

Tickets for the matches go on sale starting Tuesday, Nov. 30. Further details will be announced soon. 

BYU is on a 21-match winning streak and finished the regular season No. 4 in the nation, the program’s highest ranking since 2018. BYU currently ranks No. 2 in the NCAA in hitting percentage (.339), No. 2 in opponent hitting percentage (.118), No. 2 in match-winning percentage (.966), No. 5 in kills per set (14.38) and No. 16 in assists per set (13.03)

This year marks the ninth-straight NCAA tournament appearance for BYU and the 33rd overall.

Teams winning both matches this weekend will move on to regional play Dec. 9 and 11. The regional winners will advance to the national semifinals and championship final on Dec. 16 and 18 at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio. The national semifinal matches will be broadcast on ESPN and the championship match will be broadcast on ESPN2.
