No. 4 BYU faces San Diego in final regular season match

PROVO, Utah — No. 4 BYU women’s volleyball will play its final match of the regular season against West Coast Conference opponent San Diego on Tuesday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. PST in the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

After Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Saint Mary’s, BYU clinched the WCC championship. This is BYU’s second year in a row winning the WCC title. During head coach Heather Olmstead’s seven-season run, this is the team’s sixth conference title. 

The Cougars hold a 27-1 overall record for the season and remain undefeated in the WCC at 17-0. If BYU wins the match against San Diego, it will be the program's first undefeated conference record since 1993.

Earlier this season, the opponents faced each other in the Smith Fieldhouse on Oct. 22. The Cougars swept the Toreros 25-17, 25-13, 25-13.

In the all-time series between these two teams, BYU leads 13-10.

No. 4 Brigham Young University Cougars (27-1, 17-0 West Coast Conference)

  • The Cougars are on an 20-match winning streak
  • This is head coach Heather Olmstead’s sixth season with 20+ wins
  • CoSIDA announced Kenzie Koerber and Kennedy Eschenberg as 2021 Academic All-District Eight First Team
  • Graduate middle blocker Kennedy Eschenberg is a Senior CLASS Award finalist 
  • Junior middle blocker Heather Gneiting ranks No. 2 in the NCAA for hitting percentage, holding a .464 clip
  • As a team, BYU ranks No. 1 in the NCAA in opponent hitting percentage (.115), No. 2 in hitting percentage (.342), No. 2 in match winning percentage (.964), No. 5 in kills per set (14.45) and No. 11 in assists per set (13.12). BYU leads the WCC in all these categories.

University of San Diego Toreros (20-6, 14-3 West Coast Conference)

  • Last week, San Diego faced both Saint Mary’s and Pacific on the road. On Thursday, the Toreros posted a 3-1 victory over the Gaels. However, Pacific defeated San Diego 3-1 on Saturday. The loss knocked the Toreros out of the Top 25.
  • In the NCAA, the team ranks No. 7 in blocks per set (2.80) and No. 24 in team total blocks (268.5). San Diego leads the WCC in both of these categories.
  • Leyla Blackwell ranks No. 14 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the WCC for total blocks (127). Also, she leads the WCC in blocks per set (1.34).
  • San Diego is averaging 12.8 digs per set, 12.4 kills per set and 2.8 blocks per set.
