Jones-Perry Wins Pan American Cup with Team USA
TRUJILLO, Peru – Former BYU outside hitter Roni Jones-Perry and the United States downed the Dominican Republic (25-16, 25-21, 29-27) to win gold at the Pan American Cup on Sunday.
The U.S. cruised through pool play last week, losing just one set in wins over Colombia, Trinidad & Tobago, Mexico and Puerto Rico to qualify for the semifinals. Team USA defeated Colombia again on July 13 before beating the Dominican Republic in the gold medal match.
Jones-Perry’s top performance of the event came against Trinidad & Tobago when the West Jordan, Utah, native led Team USA with 14 points on 12 kills, a block and an ace.
Former Cougar All-American Alexa Gray also competed at the Cup with Canada, finishing sixth overall.
The Pan American Cup is an annual event consisting of teams from countries in the Western Hemisphere. This is the seventh time the United States has won gold, including each of the last three years.
