Jones-Perry, Olmstead Take Home State of Sport Awards

SALT LAKE CITY - BYU women's volleyball's Roni Jones-Perry and Heather Olmstead were each honored at the Governor's State of Sport Awards presented Wednesday by the Utah Sports Commission at Vivint Smart Home Arena.

Jones-Perry received Utah’s Collegiate Female Athlete of the Year while Olmstead was awarded Female Head Coach of the Year at the event, which honored the top performers and performances of the year from the state.

A national player of the year finalist, Jones-Perry was a first-team All-American in 2018, finishing fourth in the nation in kills per set and points per set. The AVCA Pacific South Region Player of the Year and WCC Player of the Year, Jones-Perry helped BYU win 27-straight matches and reach the NCAA Final Four.

In her fourth year as BYU head coach last season, Olmstead led the Cougars to a No.1 national ranking for 11-straight weeks, culminating in a WCC title, an NCAA Final Four appearance and a 31-2 record. Olmstead was named the AVCA National Coach of the Year, AVCA Region Coach of the Year and WCC Coach of the Year for her efforts.

The Utah Sports Commission created the Governor’s State of Sport Awards in 2012 to celebrate Utah’s sports industry and honor excellence in high school, collegiate, adaptive, professional, Olympic and Paralympic sports.
