Hyte named associate head coach

PROVO, Utah – Head coach Heather Olmstead has named David Hyte associate head coach of BYU women’s volleyball.

“Dave has worked incredibly hard to help our program reach new heights since his arrival,” Olmstead said. “I am pleased to name him associate head coach as he is extremely deserving of this title. He has been an integral part of our recent success and a constant support to me. One thing I admire about Dave is his commitment to looking for ways to help the team get better. I love the job he’s doing as our recruiting coordinator as well as our defensive coordinator. I’m grateful Dave is a BYU Cougar.”

Hyte plays an integral role on the BYU women's volleyball coaching staff. He is the defensive coordinator and specifically leads the training of the middle blockers, having played the position at BYU from 2003-04. Hyte is in charge of scouting opponents and delivering the scouting report to the team. He also serves as BYU’s recruiting coordinator that brought in the No. 13 recruiting class in the nation in 2017.

In his four seasons with the women’s volleyball team, Hyte has helped lead BYU to a combined record of 117-16 (65-7 West Coast Conference). The Cougars have also won four-straight WCC titles as well as continuing the teams’ run of now six-straight regional semifinals appearances in the NCAA tournament. In his first season in Provo, he helped BYU advance to the championship match of the 2014 NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. The Cougars’ final No. 3 ranking during that season is the highest in program history.

From 2014-17, seven different Cougars have received a total of 11 AVCA All-America citations, including Veronica Jones-Perry, Cosy Burnett, McKenna Miller and Mary Lake in 2017; Amy Boswell and Miller in 2016; Alexa Gray and Boswell in 2015 and Jennifer Hamson, Gray and Boswell in 2014. 

Before coming to BYU in 2014, Hyte served as an assistant women’s volleyball coach for two seasons at Houston from 2012-13. Before that, he was an assistant women’s volleyball coach at Idaho State from 2008-12.

Originally from Las Vegas, Hyte served a LDS Church mission to Taejon, Korea, from 1998-2000. After two-years at Utah Valley University, in which he helped the men’s club team to a national championship in 2001, he transferred to BYU where he played volleyball from 2003-04. He contributed as a member of BYU’s 2004 NCAA Championship team and 2003’s NCAA runner-up team. Hyte graduated from BYU in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.

Hyte is married to MaryAnn and the two have one daughter, Adalee, who recently celebrated her first birthday.
