REDONDO BEACH, Calif. – Former BYU women’s volleyball middle blocker Amy Boswell has been named the recipient of the 2017 West Coast Conference Mike Gilleran Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, the league announced Tuesday.

The award was announced at the eighth annual WCC Honors Dinner, held in conjunction with the Executive Council and Presidents’ Council meetings at the Crowne Plaza Redondo Beach & Marina Hotel in Redondo Beach, California, on June 7.

The Mike Gilleran Scholar-Athlete of the Year is selected by a vote of the WCC’s Executive Council to recognize the finest accomplishments in athletes, academics and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility. The award is named in honor of the conference’s first full-time commissioner, Mike Gilleran.

As a senior, Boswell was named an AVCA First-Team All-American and honored as the CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year. She was added to the All-WCC First Team each of the past two years and named the WCC Defensive Player of the Year as a junior. As a sophomore, Boswell was the No. 2 blocker in the nation, averaging 1.68 blocks per set.

Additionally, Boswell was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team as a sophomore, junior and senior as well as the Academic All-District 8 First Team for the past three years. In the 2014 NCAA Championships, she was the recipient of the prestigious Elite 89 Award – presented by the NCAA.

Boswell has volunteered in various hospitals - including going to Sapa, Vietnam - to teach the natives about first aid and hygiene. She has also volunteered hundreds of hours locally in the emergency room at Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah, in preparation for her nursing career.

Boswell is the first women’s player from BYU to receive the award. Track and field’s Miles Batty previously won the award for BYU on the men’s side in 2012.
