Cougars finish spring competition

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s volleyball finished spring competition with a 4-1-2 record following a trip to Colorado State Saturday.

“I believe that we improved throughout the course of our competitions and practice,” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “We put major emphasis on a few certain skills that we believed we needed to improve in our gym. There was healthy and good competition against in our gym and against outside competition.”

Alexa Gray led the team in the two home matches with a combined 27 kills while Tambre Haddock contributed 23 kills over the same span. Jennifer Hamson added 15 kills in her one home match played against Utah. Amy Boswell led the team in blocks against Idaho State and Utah, adding a combined 13 to go with Whitney Young’s 11.

The Cougars first played at home against Idaho State in a three-set (32-30, 25-21, 25-18) sweep of the Bengals. BYU split the additional two sets played with Idaho State taking the fourth (25-16) and the Cougars taking the fifth (15-11).

BYU next faced off in the Utah Tournament where it had two-set sweeps of Salt Lake Community College, Montana State and Utah Valley. Additionally, the Cougars split two sets with Utah.

With the completion of the 2013-14 women’s basketball season, senior Hamson joined the team for the remaining two matches of spring competition. First up was a home match against Utah where BYU fell in five sets (25-18, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-12).

That was followed on Saturday with a 3-3 tie against Colorado State on the road. Three sets were played in the morning with three additional sets being played in the afternoon.

Saturday marked the end of spring practice for the team.
