Cougars sweep visiting Dons of San Francisco
PROVO, Utah – Junior Tambre Haddock earned her 12th double-double of the season to help the No. 24 BYU women’s volleyball team secure its 3-0 (29-27, 25-15, 25-15) sweep over San Francisco Saturday afternoon.
“I’m excited with how they bounced back after San Francisco had set-point (in the first set),” BYU head coach Shawn Olmstead said. “They responded well and were able to win the next two which was encouraging. I thought we passed pretty well so our setter was able to set up Tambre and Alexa to get better looks at the ball.”
In the first set, both squads played point-for-point, tying the game 17 times in the set. BYU (14-3, 7-0 WCC) earned four consecutive points off of kills from Gray and Haddock which gave BYU a 17-14 lead. The Cougars gave up a pair of points to give the Dons (7-10, 3-4 WCC) the lead through the end of the set. San Francisco had the chance for the win at set point of 25-24, but BYU stayed in it with a Gray kill. The teams continued to play through 29 points where Camry Godfrey serviced the final point for the 29-27 win, the Cougars’ highest scoring set of the season.
BYU got off to a strong start by opening up the second set 8-2 and then worked hard to stay ahead. The Cougars extended their lead to 11-4 off of kills from Whitney Young and Haddock. BYU’s unstoppable offense forced a Don timeout after leading by nine points. BYU won the second set 25-15 from two consecutive kills by LeCheminant.
The third set started off with another even exchange of points from both teams. BYU finally broke away after a 5-0 run to take a 13-7 lead. The Dons attempted to ice the Cougars twice with timeouts, but BYU stayed hot and continued to extend their lead. The Cougars sat back to earn the 25-15 win from a San Francisco service error.
