PROVO, Utah — BYU two-sport star Jennifer Hamson has decided she will redshirt this coming volleyball season to concentrate on her senior year of basketball in 2013-14. Hamson will then play her senior season of volleyball for the Cougars in 2014.

“It’s definitely a challenge to play two sports at the collegiate level, especially when the seasons overlap,” Hamson said. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to focus on one sport each season my senior year.”

As a junior in 2012, Hamson was named AVCA first team All-America, Volleyball Magazine second team All-America and West Coast Conference Volleyball Player of the Year. She led BYU to a tie for the league title, an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament and a No. 12 national finish. She also received All-Pacific Region, All-WCC First Team and Academic All-WCC honors.

Hamson was second in the league with 4.09 kills per set on a .362 clip and reached BYU’s 1,000 kills club after just three seasons. She was also second on the team in blocks with 1.26 per set.

Hamson will now set her sites on basketball for the 2013-14 season. As a junior in 2012-13 she was top ten in the WCC in blocks (1st), rebounding (2nd), field goal percentage (4th) and scoring (10th), and was named All-Conference. In addition, Hamson has twice been named to the WCC All-Academic Team and to the Commissioner’s Silver Honor Roll.

She enters her senior season third all-time at BYU in blocks (190) and has recorded 10 career double-doubles. She needs 184 points to become just the 24th women’s basketball player to reach the 1,000-point mark in her career.

Jennifer is the daughter of David and Tresa Spaulding Hamson. Tresa was a four-time basketball All-American at BYU from 1983-87.
