Cougars compete in first swim and dive events of Conference Championship
ST. GEORGE, Utah / MISSION VIEJO, Calif. — The BYU swim and dive teams got the events started Wednesday in Mission Viejo, California and St. George, Utah, with the divers competing in a team event, and the men's 200 medley relay team setting a new school record.
Dive
The diver's started the week strong at the Marguerite Aquatics Center, with their first event being a team format. The men placed first with a score of 326.90 and the women placed second with a score of 243.65.
The men's team was rounded out by Mickey Strauss, Chase Hindmarsh and Carter Davis, while the women's team had Sophia DeBergh, Alexia Jackson and Brynn Larson as the main participants. The next three days of events will be filled with 1-meter, 3-meter and platform dives as the Cougars chase this years championship.
Swim
On the swim side, the majority of today's events at the Human Performance Center were exhibition races in preparation for the coming days, outside of the 200-yard medley relay and 800-yard freestyle relay for the men and women.
The highlight of the day came from the men's swim team, as a relay team of Diego Camacho, Josue Dominguez, Brad Prolo and Javier Nicolas Matta contributed to a new program record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:26.12 to place second in the event. The women had solid performances as well in the event as Charlotte Fie'eiki, Mackenzie Miller, Emma Marusakova and Jullia Bartell placed sixth with a 1:40.81.
In the 800-yard freestyle relay, Brigham Harrison, Luigi Riva, Abe Barragan and Camacho came in with a fourth place finish, swimming a 6:30.06 for the men. On the women's side, Halli Williams, Victoria Schreiber, Megan Bergstrom and Regan Geldmacher competed in the event, swimming a fourth place 7:20.47.
A full slate of events is set to kick-off tomorrow, as the swimmers begin competing at 10 a.m. MDT while the divers will begin at 10 a.m. PDT.
