Cougars defeat Arizona State 2-1
TEMPE, Ariz. -- BYU women's soccer defeated Arizona State 2-1 on Saturday before its second game against Northern Arizona was canceled because of rain.
Arizona native Ashley Hatch scored both goals for the Cougars, who are now 4-0 during the spring season. Both goals came off corner kicks and both were assisted by Sarah Chambers.
So far this spring, Hatch leads the team with six goals and four assists. Chambers has added three goals and four assists of her own. Jaiden Thornock and Niki Fernandes each have two goals and two assists.
Spring games have been very beneficial so far for many of the freshmen. Hatch leads the team in goals and assists, while Kayci Griffin, Brittain Dearden, Miranda Bailey and Elena Medeiros have played all the minutes in the midfield in hopes of replacing Cloee Colohan and Rachel Manning, who graduated. The extra time in the midfield has helped freshmen who played in other positions or didn't get many minutes to gain experience and develop.
The Cougars have a couple weeks off before they travel to St. George to play in a tournament at Dixie State University on March 22. BYU will face Southern Utah at 1:30 p.m. MST before also taking on Dixie State at 5:30 p.m. The tournament at Dixie State will be the closest BYU will play to home before they host a tournament on April 12.
