Gymnastics Earns First Win of the Season

CEDAR CITY, Utah - Significant improvements and solid performances from the BYU women’s gymnastics team accounted for a strong win 194.800-194.050 against Southern Utah University. The gymnasts had a focused week of practice and improved their team score from last meet by almost four points.

The night was full of personal bests and high scores. Sophomore Megan Bain placed in the top two of each of the events she competed in. Bain shattered her old career-bests with scores of 9.900 on vault, 9.900 on beam and 9.825 on floor.

In only her second meet competing all-around, sophomore Raquel Willman placed second with a score of 39.100.

To begin the night, senior team captain Natalie Pickard tied her career-high on the uneven bars with a score of 9.850. Willman also contributed with an impressive score of 9.850.

Continuing her dominant performance, Bain led the Cougars on vault, winning the event. Junior Sarah Yandow placed third in the event with a score of 9.775.

Floor was the strongest event of the night for BYU, with all six gymnasts scoring above a 9.650.

Heading into the final rotation the Cougars held a slight 146.00-145.650 lead over the Thundercats. Solid performances on beam helped to seal the BYU victory. Senior Krysten Koval had a career-high night on beam, her signature event, with a score of 9.950.

Next up for the Cougars is in-state rival University of Utah. The teams will compete Jan. 27^th at the Huntsman Center in Salt Lake City.
