Freshman Gymnasts Named MWC Scholar Athletes
PROVO, Utah (June 28, 2011) – The Mountain West Conference announced BYU gymnasts KayCee Gassaway and Megan Bain as recipients of the Scholar Athlete Award, one of the conference’s most prestigious academic honors.
Athletes qualify for the award by being enrolled for at least two semesters, significantly contributing to their team and maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better.
Gassaway and Bain competed as true freshman during the 2010-2011 season. Gassaway was particularly proficient at the uneven bars and set a new career high in that event against Utah scoring a 9.825. As an undeclared major, Gassaway accumulated a 3.86 GPA.
Bain was a consistent performer on the beam, scoring a career-best 9.825 against Auburn. Also an undeclared major, Bain maintained a 3.80 GPA. The two gymnasts will return next year as strong competitors for the Cougars.
