Cougar Gymnasts Finish Victorious on the Road
LOGAN -- Winning their first meet in two seasons the BYU women’s gymnastics team defeated Utah State on the road Friday. The Cougars finished with a season-high score of 195.350 performing consistently on each apparatus.
“We have performed well at home this season but on the road we had not performed well thus far," BYU head coach Brad Cattermole said. “Tonight we took it on the road and performed well and we are continuing to improve.”
The Cougars opened the meet on the uneven bars where they were led by Senior Megan Donehue (9.825) who has performed consistently for the Cougars throughout the season. Madeleine Johnson also posted a 9.800 on the event.
On their second apparatus of the evening they posted four scores of 9.800 or above. The Cougars were led by Natalie Eyre who tied her career high scoring a 9.850. Freshman Sarah Yandow performed her best vault thus far in her college career with a 9.800.
Next up for BYU was the floor exercise. Freshman Hailey Rollins posted her career high and led the Cougars with a 9.850. Rollins also competed on bars for the first time this season and performed a strong routine for BYU.
“She did a great job, it was a really good floor routine,” said Cattermole. “But even more was that she stepped up and did well for us on the bars so we were really pleased with Hailey tonight.”
BYU had not had a competitor in the all-around competition until Senior Danielle Goldman competed in all four events in this meet. She posted the second highest score on the floor for the Cougars (9.825). Goldman finished second in the all-around receiving a 38.925.
“Danielle has been our exhibition on beam but she hit tonight when we had to add her into the line-up last minute,” Cattermole said. “She came through big time for us tonight.”
On the beam BYU was led by veteran Kaylee Gallup with a 9.850. Following closely behind with a solid routine was Jennifer Lezeu (9.800).
The Cougars will return to Provo to host in-state rival University of Utah next Friday, February 26, at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center. The meet will be broadcast live on BYU-TV.
