Gymnasts Ready for Home Opener

PROVO -- After competing on the road for its first two meets, the BYU women's gymnastics team will return home for its home opener February 2 against Utah State in the Smith Fieldhouse. The Cougars are 2-2 on the year.

In their last meet, the Cougars edged Utah State in Logan 193.375 -- 193.275. BYU was down 144.900 -- 144.625 going into its last rotation, beam. The Cougars notched their highest score of the night and took four of the top five spots to win the event and pull out the victory.

Alethea Boon scored a career high 9.825 and tied with Lisa Willis for first place on beam. Willis also took second on floor and Aimee Walker Pond placed first on bars with a 9.800.

Utah State is coming off a third place finish at a tri-team meet at the University of Utah behind the Utes and Southern Utah. The Aggies' Jessica Parenti took second on floor and third in the all-around with a 38.975.

"We're looking to score. Home meets are what its all about," BYU coach Brad Cattermole said. "The girls love it. Having a big crowd and being at home really excites them. They perform well too."

Last year when the two faced off in Provo the Cougars recorded their third highest beam score in school history (49.500) and three current gymnasts scored career highs.
