Cougars fall to No. 16 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The BYU women’s gymnastics team fell to No. 16 Ohio State 196.575-195.575 on Friday evening at the Covelli Center in Columbus, Ohio. 

FINAL MEET RESULTS

Senior beam captain Elease Rollins led the meet with the top score of the night on beam with a 9.900. Anyssa Alvarado’s 9.900 on bars took home the third-highest score on the apparatus against Ohio State.

The Cougars started the night with their highest team bars score of the season at 49.300. Five of BYU’s scores were above a 9.800 in the first rotation, led by senior captain Alvarado, who scored a 9.900 on the apparatus. 

Anna Bramblett and Kylie Eaquinto followed close behind with individual scores of 9.875 to push the Cougars ahead of the Buckeyes 49.300-49.050.

The Cougars continued their momentum on vault in the second rotation. With a new career-high score of 9.850, Sophie Dudley and freshman Eaquinto posted BYU's highest scores on the event. 

Ohio State’s impressive team score of 49.400 on the uneven bars lifted them ahead of BYU 98.450-98.400 heading into the third rotation of the competition.

BYU went to the floor in the next rotation, where sophomore Heidi Schooley tied her career high with a 9.875 to start things off for the Cougars. Mina Margraf made her first collegiate performance on floor, scoring a 9.775. After two girls stepped out of bounds during their floor routines, BYU fell behind Ohio State 147.550-147.125 heading into the final rotation of the evening. 

The Cougars finished the competition on the beam. Third in the lineup, Margraf scored a 9.875 for BYU, followed by a 9.900 by Rollins. Having to count a fall on beam in the final rotation, BYU finished the meet with a team score of 195.575, behind Ohio State’s 196.575.

The Cougars next compete at the University of Arizona on Friday, Mar. 10 at 6 p.m. MST in the McKale Memorial Center.
