Cougars notch 193.775 in first meet of the season

LAS VEGAS — The No. 22 BYU gymnastics team posted a 193.775 to earn fourth place at the inaugural Super16 Gymnastics Meet on Saturday afternoon at the Orleans Arena. 

FINAL RESULTS

With a final score of 193.775, BYU finished the Super16 meet in fourth behind ASU (195.775) and Iowa (196.225). The Golden Bears took home first with a final score of 197.475. 

BYU kicked off the Super16 on the floor in the first rotation. The Cougars had three girls make their career debuts on the floor, with Elease Rollins starting the rotation, followed by Eliza Millar and Heidi Schooley.  

With a total score of 48.450, the Cougars ended the rotation in fourth, trailing ASU by .325. No. 8 Cal led with a score of 49.150, followed by Iowa with a final score of 48.850 as the teams went to their second events.    

In the second rotation, BYU took to the vault with a total score of 48.850 to keep them in fourth. Freshman Kylie Equinto made her career debut for BYU on the apparatus, posting a score of 9.750. Senior vault captain Allix Mason led the Cougars in the second rotation with a 9.800. 

The Cougars tackled the uneven bars on the third rotation, earning a 48.350. Eaquinto made her bars debut, and notched a 9.825 on the apparatus. Senior bars captain Anyssa Alvarado led the Cougars with a 9.900 to finish out the third rotation.  

BYU ended the meet on the balance beam. Mason started off strong for the Cougars with a 9.850. Leading BYU on the apparatus, beam captain Elease Rollins finished with a 9.900. The Cougars finished the meet with a final score of 193.775.

Cal’s Andi Li won the All-Around with a score of 39.450. Following close behind was ASU’s Emily White who notched a 39.400.

Alvarado ended the meet tied for second on bars with a 9.900. Rollins also tied for second on the balance beam with a score of 9.900.  

BYU hits the road again next week to compete in the fourth annual Rio Tinto Best of Utah meet against Utah State, SUU and Utah on Friday, Jan. 13 at the Maverik Center in Salt Lake City, Utah.
