Cougs kick off 2023 season in Vegas

PROVO, Utah — No. 22 BYU gymnastics prepares to compete in the inaugural Super16 gymnastics meet presented by Ozone at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on Saturday, Jan. 7.

MEET NOTES

There are four sessions for the Super16 meet, two on Friday and another two on Saturday. BYU will compete in the Saturday afternoon session at 12 p.m. PT. The Cougars will take on Arizona State University, University of California – Berkeley and the University of Iowa.

Amongst the top talent heading to Vegas are the last six NCAA team champions, namely Oklahoma, Michigan and UCLA. BYU’s Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference foe, SUU, will also be attending the meet before the two teams face off in the Best of Utah meet on Friday, Jan. 13.

THE COUGARS. The BYU gymnastics team heads into the 2023 season ranked No. 22 nationally as voted on by the Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association (WCGA). The Cougars finished their 2022 season as the No. 24 team in the nation and made a run to the NCAA Regionals. The 2022 team finished the season with a 196.640 average and a 393.265 National Qualifying Score (NQS) to rank them among the top 25 programs in the nation.

THE SUN DEVILS. The Sun Devils enter the season ranked No. 24 in the WCGA preseason poll. In 2022, ASU earned a share of the Pac-12 regular season title with Cal, Oregon State and Utah for the first time in program history. The Gym Devils finished with a 6-4 record and wrapped up the season ranked No. 22 on Road to Nationals.

THE GOLDEN BEARS. The Golden Bears enter the 2023 season ranked No. 8 in the WCGA preseason poll. Last season the Bears finished as the No. 11 team in the country and placed third in the NCAA Regional Final where they broke the program balance beam record and narrowly missed an NCAA Championship appearance.

THE HAWKEYES. The University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team is ranked No. 18 for the second year in the WCGA preseason poll leading into the 2023 season. The Hawkeyes finished the 2022 season ranked 15th nationally, the highest final ranking since 2004. Sophomore Adeline Kenlin finished as the NCAA runner-up on beam after scoring a 9.950 while competing as an individual at the NCAA Championships.
