No. 21 prepares for NCAA Regional Competition

PROVO, Utah – No. 21 BYU prepares to battle in the 2022 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships regionals on Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, Washington, at 1 p.m. PDT.

The Seattle Regional will host nine teams for the NCAA competition. The Cougars will compete against host No. 25 UW, No. 5 Alabama and No. 12 Michigan State on Thursday. No. 29 Stanford and No. 34 San Jose State will compete on Wednesday, March 30 at 3 p.m. PDT to determine which team will advance to the second round on Thursday. The other schools competing in Seattle will be starting their tournament run on Thursday for an evening meet at 7 p.m. PDT. These teams include No. 4 Utah, No. 13 Oregon State and No. 19 Illinois.

THE COUGARS. BYU finished its regular season ranked No. 21 in the nation after a successful season. The Cougars ended the season with the MRGC Championships, where they placed No. 4 with a final score of 196.375. Senior Sadie Miner-Van Tassell finished the competition with a new career-high score of 9.950 on the vault. Eight Cougars received all-conference honors including Guard Young being named Coach of the Year and Miner-Van Tassell receiving the title of Gymnast of the Year. Along with these conference honors, Miner-Van Tassell was awarded WCGA Regular Season All-Around All America honors and Elease Rollins was awarded WCGA Regular Season Beam All-America honors.

THE HUSKIES. UW finished its season ranked No. 25 in the nation and finished the Pac-12 Gymnastics Championship in sixth place. The Huskies finished the championship meet with a final score of 196.400 after a strong performance on the balance beam where each gymnast posted scores of 9.800 or higher.

THE TIDE. Alabama finished the season ranked No. 5 in the nation and took second place at the SEC Championships with a final score of 197.825. The Tide finished closely behind No. 2 Florida, who posted a 198.200 at the championship. Along with its strong performance at the SEC Championships, the Alabama gymnastics team had four gymnasts earn WCGA Regular Season All-America honors.

THE SPARTANS. Michigan State finished the season ranked No. 12 nationally and took second place at the Big Ten Championships with a final score of 197.050. This second-place finish was the Spartan's best performance in the Big Ten Championships since they hosted the meet back in 2006 and finished with a score of 194.975. MSU’s vault (49.250) and bars (49.300) scores were also program-best championship highs.

The top four teams will advance to the third round of the tournament on Saturday, April 2 at 5 p.m. PDT. The top two teams from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top all-around competitor and top event specialist from round two at each regional (who is not on a team advancing to nationals) will advance to the national championships. Event specialist qualifiers will only compete in the events they qualify for.
