BYU gymnastics wins back-to-back meets against Boise State

BOISE, Idaho - No. 18 BYU won its second meet in a row against No. 24 Boise State at the ExtraMile Arena on Saturday, Feb. 12, with a final score of 196.450-195.975.

“We had some great things happen tonight,” said head coach Guard Young. “Sydney Benson came in and had a great performance on floor and Mina Margraf is becoming a staple competitor on the balance beam, which is exciting to see. Sadie Miner-Van Tassell is just a workhorse and all her hard work is paying off, which showed again tonight.”

Senior standout Sadie Miner-Van Tassell took home the highest score of the night on the floor apparatus with a 9.900. Along with this award, Miner-Van Tassell also competed for the All-Around and received a score of 39.425 and tied the highest score on vault with a 9.875.  

The Cougars started the night strong on the uneven bars. Miner-Van Tassell began the rotation with a solid score of 9.850 for BYU. After a stick on the landing, bars specialist Anyssa Alvarado received a 9.925 for the third time this season. This score matches Alvarado’s career high and was the highest score on bars for the Cougars. BYU finished the first rotation ahead of Boise State 49.175-49.075.

BYU continued to soar on vault in the second rotation. Fifth-year senior Haley Pitou started off for the Cougars with a 9.700. Lexi Griffith and Sydney Benson both posted individual scores of 9.800 to help boost the overall score for BYU. Miner-Van Tassell continued to shine with the highest vault score for the Cougars with a 9.875. Despite Boise State posting three bars scores above 9.900, BYU extended the lead to 98.175-97.950 going into rotation three.

Lindsey Hunter took the floor first for the Cougars in rotation three. For the second week in a row, senior Addy Rieder posted a 9.875 with her floor routine. This score matched Rieder’s career high on the apparatus. Miner-Van Tassell posted the highest score for BYU with a 9.900 to keep the Cougars ahead of the Broncos 147.325-147.025 going into the final rotation.

BYU ended the night on the balance beam. Sophomore Lauren Ono notched a 9.825 to open the final rotation for the Cougars. Beam specialist Sophia McClelland posted the highest beam score for BYU with a 9.850. McClelland tied two BSU gymnasts for the highest score of the night on the balance beam. With four scores above 9.800, the Cougars took home the win over Boise State with a final score of 196.450-195.975.
