Cougars in Seventh, Yuan in Eighth After Day One
ST. GEORGE, Utah –Despite a stellar round one, the BYU women’s golf team slipped from second to seventh after the first day of competition at the Entrada at Snow Canyon golf course, shooting a combined 55-over 631 on Monday.
“We started the day off really well,” BYU coach Carrie Roberts said. “Everyone came out and played great.”
Maggie Yuan led the way for the Cougars, shooting a first round 1-over 73 and following that up with a second round 6-over 78. She was especially effective on the back nine where she birdied four times on the day.
Yuan is tied for eighth going into the final round.
Maria Yacaman started the day with a bang as she was tied for seventh after round one.
“The first round was the best round we’ve had all season,” Roberts said. “Maria played great and Maggie was solid.”
While the Cougars excelled during round one with score of 14-over 302, round two was much more difficult as they posted a 41-over 329.
“The putting was tough and the green was quick,” Roberts said. “Really it was hole No. 16 that hurt us. Take that one hole out of the equation and we have a pretty decent score.”
As a team, BYU shot 13-over on No. 16 in round two, but Roberts is still optimistic about the final round of the Cougars' only home tournament.
“I’m excited about tomorrow,” Roberts said. “We’ll come out prepared and ready to go.”
