SAMMAMISH, Wash – The BYU women’s golf team held pace, finishing 11th overall at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
“It was a rough start,” Maggie Yuan said. “We struggled the first few days and, on a hard course like that, it's hard sometimes to come back strong.”
Yuan led the Cougars, finishing the tournament in 11th place overall. She struggled the first two days, posting a combined 11-over, but finished strong with a 72 for an even par in the final round.
The 72 on the final day was the best score on the course for the Cougars, but it didn't come easy for Yuan.
“I started with two boogies,” Yuan said. “It was raining early in the morning but I just had to fight. You can’t expect to hit perfect shots when it’s wet.”
While Yuan finished well in the rain, the Cougars could not make up the ground lost on the first day.
BYU showed noticeable improvement, however, over the three-day event. After posting a 322 in the first round, BYU posted back-to-back rounds of 309 and 310 to finish the invitational.
Senior Ashley Malaksa improved on back-to-back rounds of 80 to shoot a 4-over 76. The final round allowed for Malaska to move up 10 spots to 35th overall. Malaska was followed by Amanda Keith and Annika Afoa who finished tied for 41st and 56th, respectively.
“This tournament was good training for us,” Yuan said. “The next tournament we’re going to focus more. It’s an easier course and more scorable for everybody.”
The Cougars return to the links October 24 for the UNLV Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown.
