Cougars Finish First Tournament of the Season
WORLEY, Idaho - After two great rounds of golf, the women’s team struggled against the elements and finished in eighth place at the Circling Raven Collegiate on Tuesday.
“We played a solid first two rounds,” said Coach Carrie Roberts. “It was windy and hot on day two, and that wore on us.”
The first two rounds were great for the Cougars with a second-place standing after the first round and fourth place after the second. However, in the third round, BYU struggled in the short game and couldn't make up the deficit.
Despite the struggle of the last round, there were several bright spots for the Cougars. Maggie Yuan finished 10th overall and Annika Afoa shot a final-round 75, moving her up to 13th overall.
“Maggie played a solid first two rounds and that was a great finish for Annika,” Roberts said.
Yuan posted her eighth career top-10 finish while Afoa increased her number of top-20 finishes to five.
The tournament was a good indicator of the talent level the Cougars have and of the potential they can reach this season.
“It was a rough start,” Roberts said. "We were a little rusty and it showed a bit but I know that once we get some more confidence, we’ll be fine.”
The Cougars' next tournament is Oct. 3 in Sammamish, Wash.
