Cougars Grab Third at MWC Championship
LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. -- Kelsey Vines led the BYU women's golf team to a third-place finish Saturday with a 70 (-2) in the final round of the Mountain West Conference Championships in Litchfield, Ariz.
"We are very please with how we finished," said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. "We competed well and we are confident we will make it to the regional tournament."
Vines, a sophomore, shot a 2-under 70 in round three to move up two spots from day two and tie with Betsy Kelly of Colorado State for second place. Vines' second-place spot is her fifth top-10 finish of 2011. She was just four strokes behind individual champion Therese Koelbaek of UNLV.
She was the lone BYU player named to the Women's Golf All-MWC Team, her first-career all-conference honor.
"Kelsey played great," Roberts said. "She carried us and was steady as always."
Maggie Yuan, who started the day tied for first, shot a 3-over 75 to tie for fifth and finish with a 216 (E) tournament total.
In her final MWC Championship Tournament, senior Jade Bollinger posted a final-round 75 (+3) and a tournament total of 223 (+7) to tie for 17th.
Annika Afoa shot a third-round 76 (+4) to tie for 28th while teammate Amanda Keith shot a 5-over 77 on day three to finish 35th.
The Cougars hope to continue their season at an NCAA Regional Tournament. Regional fields will be announced on an upcoming date.
