Cougars Claim Lead After Day One
WORLEY -- In their first action of the fall season, the 2010-11 BYU women’s golf team took to the links and captured the overall lead Monday at the Circling Raven Collegiate Invitational in Worley, Idaho.
“We played really well for the first event of the year,” said BYU head coach Carrie Roberts. “We always have room for improvement but I was very pleased with our poise and balance.”
After the first round of play, BYU stood in third place, two strokes behind Oregon State and one behind Northern Arizona, with Cougar golfers shooting a combined 303 on the par-72 course.
However, strong rounds of 73 by both senior Jade Bollinger and sophomore Amanda Keith in the second round of 18 propelled the Cougars to the top of the leader board, establishing a one-stroke lead over Northern Arizona and a six-stroke lead over Portland State. Bollinger and Keith are tied for seventh heading into the final day of play.
Junior Maggie Yuan and sophomores Annika Afoa contributed to the team effort for the Cougars during the second 18, shooting rounds of 76, 75 and 76 respectively.
“They played great,” said BYU assistant coach Jake Ellison. “It was definitely a team effort today and everyone was on their game.”
The Cougars will look to hold on to the top spot of the 20-team field in the final round of 18 which will begin at 8 a.m. Pacific Time Tuesday at the Circling Raven Golf Club.
