Cougars Conclude Season at MWC Championships
SEASIDE -- Two top-15 finishers highlighted the Mountain West Conference Championships for the BYU women’s golf team as round-three action concluded Saturday. Sophomore Maggie Yuan tied for fourth place at +11 while freshman Kelsey Vines tied for 12th place at +15, showcasing a bright future for the program.
“This wasn’t one of our best tournaments, and we definitely could have played better,” said BYU head coach Robbie Bosco. “The course was very challenging with really fast greens, and it took us a while to figure out. Maggie had a great tournament and really finished strong. It’s exciting to have her and Kelsey coming back next year. The future is very bright for BYU women’s golf.”
Overall, the Cougars finished seventh in the field at +89 (320-319-314—953), one stroke behind Wyoming. No. 21 New Mexico won the Championship at +34 followed by No. 22 TCU (+43), Colorado State (+50), No. 37 UNLV (+64) and No. 45 San Diego State.
BYU had its best showing in round three, going +26 and besting the Cowgirls and Lady Rebels on the day. Yuan led the way with a round of 73, including two birdies. Vines also had two birdies during her 18 holes and finished with a score of 77.
While junior Jade Bollinger struggled to an 84 on Saturday, the two-time AGCA Scholar Athlete posted the third-best Cougar score overall at +30 to place 30th. Senior Shayla Forsey and freshman Amanda Keith both carded 82s in the final round. Forsey concluded the event in 32nd place at +35 while Keith placed 35th at +42.
New Mexico’s Jodi Ewart, the fifth-ranked golfer in the nation, won the individual title at +1 overall and was named the MWC Women’s Golfer of the Year.
