Yuan Wins Individual Title, Cougars Place Fifth at Entrada Classic
ST. GEORGE -- BYU’s Maggie Yuan won the individual title at the BYU Entrada Classic in St. George, Utah, Tuesday, while leading the Cougars to a fifth-place overall finish. San Diego State claimed the team title in the 13-school event played at the Entrada at Snow Canyon Country Club.
A native of Sichuan, China, Yuan shot a 4-over-par 76 in Tuesday’s final round to win individual honors with a 2-under-par, three-round total of 214.
“Maggie was tremendous. She got off to a great start with a 64 in the first round and really set the tone for the rest of the team,” said BYU women’s golf coach Robbie Bosco. “Over the final two rounds she played very solid golf. It was great to see her win the individual title.”
Daphne Parker of the University of Louisville finished one-stroke back of Yaun at 215 as the only other player to navigate the 54 holes with an under-par total. Malin Enarsson of San Diego State led the winning Aztecs with a third-place total of 3-over-par 219. Parker and Enarsson shot 74 and 75, respectively, in Tuesday’s final round.
BYU maintained its fifth-place standing over the final 18 holes on Tuesday, scoring 313 for a three-round 65-over-par 929 total score. San Diego State’s 26-over 829 score was followed by Louisville at 905, Nebraska at 921 and Colorado State at 922. Yuan recorded scores of 64-74-76 for her winning 214 total. Her opening round 64 set a BYU single-round and Entrada women’s course record. BYU’s Jade Bollinger placed tied for 17th after a third-round 76 on Tuesday, while Kelsey Vines scored 79 over the final 18 holes to tie for 29th. In addition to Bollinger (79-76-76—231) and Vines (83-74-79—236), Amanda Keith (82-86-82—250) and Shayla Forsey (86-84-86—256) contributed to BYU’s fifth-place performance.
“It was a good tournament for our team,” said Bosco following the final round on Tuesday. “A top-5 finish gives us some momentum as we head to Tucson this weekend. The girls are really excited to see what they can do against another strong field.”
The Cougars will continue tournament play this Friday and Saturday at the Mountain View Collegiate in Tucson, Ariz.
