MALIBU -- Day one of the Bruin Wave Invitational is in the books with the BYU women’s golf team placing 17th. The Cougars were 35 strokes over par in a field that featured 11 ranked teams and saw only three teams shoot below 72.

“I think the girls did pretty well considering how long it’s been since we’ve played in a tournament,” said BYU head coach Robbie Bosco. “Our practice round on Saturday got cut short due to rain so we didn’t really have a chance to see the course, and we had a few too many double and triple bogeys. They’re all just anxious to get out there and play well the rest of the tournament.”

The Cougars entered this event having not competed since Nov. 2 after a scheduled tournament in February was canceled due to rain.

Sophomore Maggie Yuan led the way with a first-round 77, posting two birdies on the day. She tied for 49th place in the field of 95 golfers. She finished the day in style with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.

Freshman Kelsey Vines continued her solid campaign, going 8-over-par for the second-best Cougar score of the day. She also birdied the 18th hole. Senior Jade Bollinger went +10 in the first round with a birdie on the fourth hole.

Senior Shayla Forsey and junior Emily Copier each notched two birdies on the day in their respective first rounds. Forsey finished the first 18 holes 12 strokes over par while Copier was one shot back at +13.

Second-round action will take place on Tuesday.
