In Third After Two at MWC Championships

SEASIDE -- In warmer weather conditions, the BYU women’s golf team maintained momentum to stay in contention at the Mountain West Conference Championships by landing in third place after two rounds.

The Cougars endured a chilly day on Thursday by tying for second place with TCU and stayed with the competition Friday, finishing a few strokes ahead of UNLV and Colorado State at 42-over-par at Black Horse Golf Course.

“We played well today,” said head coach Sue Nyhus. “We improved and got better as the day went on and we held our position.”

Sophomore Jade Bollinger leads the team in seventh place overall in the field of 35 golfers. She is currently at 6-over-par after completing a 5-over second round, making a team-high three birdies on Friday and shooting eight holes at par.

Natalia Jimenez also scored a 5-over 77 in the second round to end up tied for tenth overall at 9-over-par. She made two birdies on the day and a team-high 10 holes at even-par, including four in a row to end the round.

Freshman Maggie Yuan followed pursuit by also converting two holes with birdies and nine holes at par, four of those coming on consecutive holes at mid-course. She is currently tied for 13th overall at11-over-par after a 7-over second round.

Sara Romero and Shayla Forsey each scored one birdie on the day with multiple holes made at par, with Romero making five in a row on the back nine.

The Cougars will continue with round three Saturday morning with tee time scheduled at 8:30 a.m. MT. Forsey will start off for BYU at approximately 10:10 a.m. MT.

“We hope to keep playing good golf Saturday, improve our placement and just do our best,” Nyhus said.
