ST. GEORGE -- Following a seventh-place finish after two rounds of the BYU Dixie Classic, the women’s golf team responded with its best effort of the tournament by shooting a 19-over-par third round to end with a sixth-place finish.

“It was a good tournament for us,” said head coach Sue Nyhus. “We improved in every round and we’re making our way to where we want to be as a team.”

Under cold weather conditions, the Cougars were led by senior Natalia Jimenez, who finished the tournament in 13th place overall at 12-over-par by completing the final round with the majority of holes at par and an eagle on par-5 hole one. On Tuesday, she had made the first hole at par.

Maggie Yuan had another solid performance as she ended the tournament in 15th place at 13-over-par. She made Wednesday’s final round at par as she improved her second-round score by seven strokes. She scored two birdies on the day. It also marked her third consecutive tournament finishing in the top 20.

Jade Bollinger and Shayla Forsey played a solid tournament by finishing at 23-over and 25-over, respectively. Forsey improved her second-round score by eight strokes in Wednesday’s final round as she once again scored a birdie on hole one. Both scored two birdies apiece in the third round.

“Shayla and Maggie both had nice comebacks in the final round,” Nyhus said.

Sophomore Sara Romero also improved in the final round as she shot a 10-over 82.

The Cougars will next compete at the Lady Gator Invitational April 6-7 in Gainesville, Florida, before preparing for the Mountain West Conference Championships April 16-18.

“To prepare for these tournaments, we just need to continue working on our short game and we’ll be fine,” Nyhus said.
