BYU Wins Roar-EE Invitational
MAMARONECK -- The BYU women's golf team proved their strength and skill as they won the Roar-EE Invitational--their third straight victory this season. Junior Natalia Jimenez lead the Cougars throughout the tournament and won the individual competition with an overall score of 229 at 16-over-par.
"It's great that Natalia was able to win this tournament," said BYU head coach Sue Nyhus. "It was her first college win, which is always exciting."
Four BYU golfers finished in the top ten of the tournament. Senior Juli Erekson shot a 4-over-par 75 in round three to help her finish in second place, just four strokes behind Jimenez. Sophomore Daphne Vines finished in sixth place and freshman Jade Bollinger followed as she tied for 10th place.
"Today was really exciting for us because everyone played well," Nyhus said.
With Jimenez' win, three of BYU's five starters--Erekson, Childers and Jimenez--have experience winning a tournament in their college careers.
The Roar-EE Invitational, hosted by Columbia University, was a 14-team tournament featuring several Ivy League schools including Harvard, Yale and Princeton. Harvard came in second and Yale followed in third place. The tournament was held at the par-71 Hampshire Country Club, where tournament tees were set at 5,833 yards.
"Our strong finish at this tournament prepares us that much more for the Mountain West Conference Championships," Nyhus said.
BYU will compete in the MWC Championships April 17, 18 and 19 in Albuquerque, N.M.
