Newren leads Cougars in Mexico

BAJA -- Rachel Newren finished the Baja Golf Invitational in second place, four strokes behind leader Stephanie Ruiz from University of Nebraska. Newren shot 227 overall, just 11 strokes over par. The Cougars finished second to The University of Nebraska in the team standings.

The other Cougars played well also, with Ashley Childers, Juli Wightman, and Danielle von Armin all shooting good scores. Childers shot the second best score on the team, coming in at a total of 235 strokes. Wightman and von Armin were right behind her, tied at 236.

Coach Sue Nyhus said "We're on the right track. We showed a lot of good things and I think this tournament is a good starting point for the season."

The tournament was played at a par 72 course, three rounds over two days. The Cougars will travel to Miami, Florida to compete in the Miccosukee Women's Golf Championship February 21-22.
