BYU Battling for Top Ten
TUCSON -- BYU makes a comeback in Tuesday's round of the Arizona Invitational and is vying for a top 10 finish ahead of UNLV.
The Cougars shot a team total of 310, a seven shot improvement from Monday's round, and moved up one position to a tie for 13th after the second round. BYU is 11 shots back from 10th position, which is not only ideal for position's sake but also for pulling ahead of UNLV.
"I'd really like for us to finish ahead of UNLV since they are in our conference and it is important for us to beat them," said head coach Sue Nyhus. "However, our goal for tomorrow is to have a good round so these kids can believe in themselves. Everyone is capable and ready; it's just a matter of time."
Freshman Catalina Guacaneme and sophomore Natalie Newren kept the Cougars heads' up high with two marvelous scores of 74 and 75, and will lead BYU into the final round on Wednesday.
"Two of our players, Catalina and Natalie, were under par most of the day," Nyhus said. "But we struggled to finish and made some big numbers on the last few holes; Natalie had a triple bogey and Catalina made a double bogey on the last hole."
Pepperdine is leading with an eight-stroke lead over Southern California. Wednesday's final round will start with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
